Compressed Will Represented

This work is an audio installation.

Here I’m exploring ones emotional response to music as a form of sculptural material (to be shaped).  The work is a combination of brief moments of music, noise, sound, and silence towards that end.

Certain moments in rock music I think of as densely compressed, heavily amplified primal human expression. It’s that primal emotional movement one gets from intense music that I’m working with at the center of this piece. I was thinking about how rock does this especially through the amplification of the amplification of human emotions. Theres a lot of primal power there. Rock and Roll was slang for intercourse before its musical use.

The piece began with hundreds of segments of non-mainstream rock songs and splicing together many beginnings, middles and ends of songs. It then developed from there into a more complex mix in the course of many reedits over a 2 year period. Its made to be experienced at a relatively loud, visceral audio level in a very soft and sound absorbent environment.

For an unusual sound absorption material, I’ve found the very soft (and nontoxic) insulation made from recycled cotton denim fabric which I plan to line the  surface walls of an installation with.

The material is perfect for this project, and is extremely sound absorbent.

These photos show various sorts of specialized rooms I’ve been looking at for the installation: padded cells, anechoic chambers and others.

Samples of the blue jean insulation.  On the right it is shown as it would be used as building insulation.
