It Is All In Your Head
A Remix/Remake of Sylvie Bolioli’s short film of Alfred Hitchcock’s “GAS”
Digital Video
(PLANNED COMPLETION DATE 8/1/2010)
I got the idea to rework the story of a professionally shot film that had completed its run.
I was interested in working from all the takes and shot footage that went into the production of a pro film, and draw upon conflicting realities often found in different takes of every shot, scene and in this case, alternate endings and reshot scenes. I wanted to rethink the will of the construction of the story in a way, and splinter the conventional single reality narrative of normative dramatic film. By playing the conflicts between takes against one another, the viewers interpretive role in story becomes more central.
It took two years to find the right film, and another year to get editing time, funding and assistance on track.
In association with London based filmmaker Sylvie Bolioli I am working from all shot footage from GAS, her 2005 short film to create a new video work titled Its All In Your Head.
GAS was based on a story Hitchcock published in 1919 which Bolioli discovered in her original research and had never been made into a film prior. The story is a suspense thriller centered on one character’s psychological reality with many of the elements that later became known as “Hitchcockian”. Making use of differing takes throughout, the new fractured narrative is a vertically stacked split screen video work.
While It Is All In Your Head relates to Bolioli’s telling of the story, it takes significant liberties regarding the order of events and outcome of the original story in an alternate effort to reconsider how Hitchcock’s vision could be directed to speak to our time.
As a psychological thriller, GAS connects well with the larger interests of my practice. The story and the film that was shot by Bolioli’s crew directly explore alternate states of consciousness and significant shifts in perceptual realities.
